The Salesforce ecosystem needs administrators, developers, and consultants across almost every industry. Getting started does not require a specific degree, but it does reward a structured approach.
1. Learn the platform fundamentals
Begin with the free learning paths on Trailhead. Focus on how Salesforce models data — objects, fields, and relationships — and on security basics such as profiles, permission sets, and sharing rules.
2. Choose a direction
- Administrator: configuration, automation with Flow, reports, and user support
- Developer: Apex, Lightning Web Components, and integrations
- Consultant: business analysis, solution design, and stakeholder communication
Many people start as administrators and specialise later.
3. Build something real
Certifications open doors, but practical work keeps them open. Use a free Developer Edition org to build a small end-to-end solution — for example a case-management app with automation and a dashboard — and be ready to explain your design choices.
4. Get certified
The Salesforce Certified Administrator or Platform Developer I exams are common starting points. Prepare with hands-on practice rather than memorisation.
5. Gain project experience
Internships and supervised work on live projects teach what self-study cannot: requirements gathering, deployment, and working with real users.
Our training and internship programme is designed around exactly this path. You can also see open roles.
